I passed a woman walking with a dog down the lane yesterday.
As she approached she was smiling at me with the sort of smile which generally
denotes familiarity. And then she stopped and said ‘How are you?’ All I could
do was give her the stock reply I usually give when I haven’t a clue who the
enquirer is and I’m not in the mood for the long explanation anyway: ‘I’m fine.
How are you?’ ‘I’m fine, thank you,’ she replied. And then she walked on, still
smiling.
I don’t get this, you know, I really don’t.
