The Expert Explains.

There was a news report today about some UFO reports that have gone missing from the British MOD files. I have no strong opinion either way on UFOs; it’s one of those things I keep an open mind about. It did remind me, though, of a documentary I watched one night about a series of celebrated sightings, back in the seventies I think, around the moorland country of West Yorkshire.

The programme centred on the experiences of a policeman who spent the night chasing around in his car, following up sightings of strange craft and lights and so on. They interviewed the policeman – now retired, of course – as the major link in the story. He was nothing if not a very regular, ordinary sort of man.

He recalled an incident in the early hours of the morning when he’d come round a bend leading into a small town, and found the road blocked by a large, circular craft with lighted windows. He’d had to stop the car, of course, and regarded the object for a few seconds before blacking out. When he came to, it had gone.

Cut to the ‘expert’ – a camp sort of individual with a weak voice and supercilious attitude - who explained what had really happened. The policeman had obviously been overtired, he said, and what he’d really seen was a double decker bus parked at the side of the road. He’d stopped the car and then fallen asleep. When he woke up, the bus had obviously pulled away and gone. What he didn’t explain was:

1 What the hell a double decker bus was doing parked at the side of the road in the early hours of the morning. They’re only used on regular service routes and don’t run that late.

2 Why a perfectly ordinary copper, who drove all day for a living and must have overtaken thousands of parked double decker buses, should have mistaken this one for a large circular object blocking the whole road.

3 Why a trained individual high on energy and adrenalin would have fallen asleep after apparently encountering the object of his pursuit.

I love it when experts come up with explanations like that, I really do.

I enjoy reading UFO stories from witnesses and what the experts have to say about it, too :) Like everything else it's all in the eye of the beholder, I guess. That's a beautiful new header picture you've put up, Jeff and the purple background works surprisingly well (but is it purple for you, also?)

I've noticed, Della, that mainstream documentaries seem to have a 'default position' to which they have to adhere: there is nothing strange going on; everything is as it appears on the surface and as the system would have you believe. Interestingly, though, they sometimes come up with 'experts' who are less than convincing in themselves and offer the most amusingly implausible explanations. I sometimes wonder whether there's something like a double bluff going on behind the scenes. I remember seeing one once on the JFK assassination. The 'proof' they offered for there having been only one gunman was so blatantly manipulated that I couldn't imagine anybody being fooled by it.

The header pic is Crummock Water in the Lake District. The background is set to a very dark blue, but it is a purplish dark blue so I suppose that isn't too bad.

I know what you mean about the double bluff, I sometimes think I've missed something when watching documentaries of this kind. Maybe that's what they're counting on from their viewers.

So I see Crummock Water is another gorgeous destination in the Lake District. I don't think we'll be back this year unfortunately, but it's on the list for next..

The Crummock Water and Buttermere area is a most beautiful part of The Lakes, Della. Any chance you might take in The Peak District and we can meet up?

Well this summer it looks like we're stuck here, except maybe for a short weekend away somewhere in Germany. Hopefully by the October school holiday we'll be able to go somewhere but it might be south.. I'm absolutely intent though on going back to the Lake District and a portion of Scotland and will definitely annoy you with questions of directions, advice, etc. and expect that you pick up your mobile phone. We can certainly meet in the Peak District..it seems very far off, but it's more likely next summer or spring.

Actually, Della, I'm being quite selfish and unrealistic. There are plenty of places more worth visiting than the Peak District, in my opinion.
